IronchoirVocoder effect · your voice sings chords the moment it's inserted
The only vocoder plugin you'll ever need to make your voice sing chords.
Insert it on a vocal and it sings: Ironchoir hears the pitch you sing and plays a chord on it with its own synth, in the song's key, with no keyboard, no MIDI track and no routing. CLARITY keeps the words clear, the stereo spread folds safely to mono, and every preset is matched to your dry voice.

Hear the difference
The same vocal loop, without and with Ironchoir.
A sung hook singing full chords in its own key
A dry sung hook - triads in the hook's key (CHORD TRIAD, KEY D# MINOR, CARRIER AUTO)
The same hook singing chords from MIDI notes
The same hook - CARRIER MIDI on synthesised MIDI chords (D# minor, B, C# major, one a bar)
Warm seventies string chords from a soft sung phrase
A soft sung phrase - four-note chords set low (CHORD FOUR, SMOOTH 300 ms, KEY D MINOR)
A talking synth lead, every word clear
A sung vocal loop - Voice / Talking Lead (CHORD SINGLE, SMOOTH 25 ms, CLARITY 50 %)
A rapped line turned into a whisper pad
A rapped vocal loop - Carrier / Whisper Pad (CARRIER NOISE, SMOOTH 800 ms)
Power chords on a dry hook, nothing to set
The first clip's dry hook - Init (CARRIER AUTO, CHORD POWER, SMOOTH 50 ms), no keyboard
Every line is a sung or rapped vocal loop; the chords are synthesised inside the plug-in, in one clip from MIDI notes. Each pair is level-matched.
Ironchoir in action
Ironchoir in under a minute: CHORD, SMOOTH, FORMANT, the whisper carrier and the presets on one voice.
Why Ironchoir
Sings the moment it's inserted
Most vocoders stay silent until a synth or MIDI track is routed in. Ironchoir's AUTO carrier reads the pitch you sing 60 ms ahead and plays a chord on it with its own bright synth, so a dry vocal sings at once.
Words you can understand
CLARITY puts your own S, T and F sounds back on top, so the words stay clear where a vocoder on its own blurs them. SMOOTH runs from crisp, talking words to a slow pad.
Wide, level and mono-safe
The chord's notes spread left and right with the root identical on both sides, so a mono fold loses at most about 1 dB and nothing cancels. The level is matched to your dry voice, so A/B is fair.
Chord. Smooth.
Two big knobs do the work: which notes your voice sings, and how closely the sound follows your words.
- VST3 · AU · AAX
- Windows and macOS
- 4 carriers
- 12 presets
The vocoder plugin
- Chords in key. POWER fits any key; TRIAD and FOUR follow the song's KEY and SCALE, 13 scales in all.
- Words you can understand. CLARITY puts your S, T and F sounds back on top; SMOOTH runs from crisp words to a slow pad.
- Wide and mono-safe. The chord's notes spread left and right with the root on both sides: at most about 1 dB lost in a mono fold.
- Level-matched. Every preset sits at the loudness of your dry voice, so A/B compares the sound, not the volume.
- CHORD (SINGLE, POWER, TRIAD, FOUR), KEY and SCALE, and four CARRIER modes: AUTO, MIDI (up to eight held notes), an external track, and NOISE for a whisper.
- SMOOTH (25 ms to 1.5 s), CLARITY, FORMANT and every note movable down or up (-2 to +2).
- LOW LATENCY (about 7 ms), MIX, Input and Output gain, IN and OUT meters, and ENGAGE.
- 12 factory presets and your own preset files; A/B, undo and redo, MIDI Learn on every control; a window from 75 to 200 %; the full manual.
CARRIER · AUTO
Sing. It plays the chords.
AUTO reads your pitch 60 ms ahead and plays the chord on it with its own synth of five detuned saws: no keyboard, no MIDI track, no routing.
What Ironchoir does
Every control has one job: a voice that sings chords, with words you can follow.
CHORD
From one note to four
SINGLE sings your note alone, a talking synth lead. POWER, the default, adds its fifth and the same note higher up: an open sound that fits any key. TRIAD builds the in-key chord on the song's KEY and SCALE, and FOUR adds the seventh for a lush, string-like sound.
SMOOTH
Crisp words or a slow pad
How fast the sound follows your voice, 25 ms to 1.5 s. Short keeps every consonant crisp and the words easy to follow; long smears them into a pad that rings on after you stop. The line under the knob names the zone, from CRISP WORDS to SLOW WASH.
CARRIER
Choose where the notes come from
AUTO, the default, plays CHORD on the pitch you sing. MIDI plays up to eight notes you hold on a keyboard. SIDECHAIN turns any track you send in, a pad, a synth or a drum loop, into the sound that speaks. NOISE carries the words on breath, as a whisper. With nothing held or sent, it follows your voice.
KEY and SCALE
Chords in the song's key
12 keys and 13 scales, from MAJOR and MINOR to the modes, the pentatonics and BLUES, for TRIAD and FOUR. Set them once for the song: presets keep them. There is no automatic key detection; POWER and SINGLE fit any key.
CLARITY
Words you can understand
Puts your own S, T and F sounds, above 4 kHz, back on top, so the words stay clear where a vocoder on its own blurs them. Above 50 % it adds your voice's top end from 2.5 kHz too. At 0 % you hear the vocoder alone.
FORMANT
A bigger or smaller machine
Down makes the machine bigger and darker, up smaller and brighter, from -100 to +100 %, without changing the notes. The small knob under CHORD, OCTAVE, moves every note down or up, -2 to +2: a deep machine under a high voice, or a small, bright one.
Stereo spread
Wide, and safe in mono
The chord's notes are shared out left and right with the root identical on both sides. The sides stay at least 0.6 correlated, so a mono fold loses at most about 1 dB and nothing cancels. SINGLE stays centred.
Level match
Fair comparisons, every time
The vocoder is matched to the loudness of your dry voice while you sing: every factory preset's average within about 0.9 LU of the dry at -10, -18 and -26 LUFS in, so switching it on compares the sound, not the volume.
LOW LATENCY
Sing through it live
Off, Ironchoir reads your pitch 60 ms ahead so each chord is ready when its first syllable arrives: about 67 ms, compensated by your DAW. On, about 7 ms for singing through it live, and each new chord lands 20 to 50 ms late.
MIX, IN and OUT
Fit it to the track
MIX blends the vocoder with your dry voice, equal power, kept in time with it. IN and OUT set the level either side, with meters, and a safety limiter keeps the vocoder under -1 dBFS.
12 sourced presets
Start from settings that work
In-key triads, warm seventies string chords, a slow wash, a talking lead, present words, a raw early machine, a bigger and a smaller machine, a whisper pad, keyboard chords and a drum loop that speaks, each built from a documented vocoder setting.
The pipes
See the bands sing
Nine iron organ pipes light with the vocoder's bands: the long middle pipes with the lows, the short outer ones with the highs, the left half with the left side. With ENGAGE off the pipes go dark.
Inside the plugin
The Ironchoir window: two big knobs, four carriers, the song's key and nine pipes that light with the sound.

How Ironchoir compares
A vocoder that sings on its own, in key and in time, with the words kept clear.
| Ironchoir | Typical vocoder plugins | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting started | Sings the moment it's inserted: no synth, no MIDI, no routing | Often silent until a synth or MIDI track is routed in |
| Chords | From your sung pitch in the song's key, or from held MIDI notes | Often only what you play on a keyboard |
| Words | CLARITY puts the consonants back; SMOOTH from crisp to pad | Often blurred and hard to follow |
| Level | Matched to your dry voice on every preset | Often jumps with every note and vowel |
| Stereo | Wide, with the root identical on both sides; mono-safe | Often falls apart in mono |
| Carriers | Four: AUTO, MIDI, any track, or noise | Often one |
| Singing live | LOW LATENCY: about 7 ms | Often missing |
| Try-and-compare | A/B, A>B, undo and redo | Often missing |
| Hardware control | MIDI Learn on every control | Often host automation only |
| Licence | 5 computers per copy, no dongle, works offline | Often fewer activations, or a dongle |
| Updates | Lifetime updates included | Often paid upgrades |

Questions
Do I need a keyboard or a synth?
No. On AUTO, the default, it hears the pitch you sing and plays a chord on it with its own synth. MIDI and the external carrier are there when you want to choose the notes or the sound.
Will the chords be in key?
POWER (the default) and SINGLE fit any key. TRIAD and FOUR use the KEY and SCALE you set in the footer (C MAJOR by default); there is no automatic key detection.
Why does it add latency?
It reads your pitch 60 ms ahead so each chord is ready when its note starts: about 67 ms in total, which your DAW compensates. LOW LATENCY cuts it to about 7 ms for singing through it live.
Can I play the chords myself?
Yes: CARRIER MIDI plays up to eight held notes from a MIDI track sent to the plug-in. With no key held it follows your voice again.
Can another track be the carrier?
Yes: choose the third CARRIER key and send any track to the plug-in's side input, such as a pad, a synth or a drum loop. A stereo track gives a stereo sound.
Does it work in mono?
Yes. A mono track gets the stereo sound's mono fold exactly, and the stereo spread loses at most about 1 dB when folded, with nothing cancelling.
How much CPU does it use?
About a third of one core at 44.1 or 48 kHz while it sings, a few percent at MIX 0 % or in silence, plus about 1.2 % for the open window.
Does it work in my DAW?
Any 64-bit DAW that loads VST3, AU or AAX plug-ins, on Windows 7 SP1 or later or macOS 10.13 or later. There is no standalone app.
How many computers can I use it on?
Up to five of your own for each copy you buy. To move it, deactivate it in the plugin on the old computer and unlock it on the new one.
Does it need the internet?
Once, to unlock it with the code we email you. After that it checks in now and then and works offline in between.
Is there a manual?
Yes. The full manual explains every control, every preset and the menus, with tips. It opens from the help key (?) in the plugin's top bar, and lives at https://voxsamples.com/ironchoir-vocoder-manual.
What if it's not for me?

Founder's Story
"When COVID hit, I finally had time to dive into music production—only to discover I was missing the right tools. The plugins I tried were clunky, overloaded with unnecessary features, and killed my vibe with endless tweaking. I knew there had to be a better way.
So, with my engineering background, I started making free and simple audio plugins for my producer friends. They loved them! That’s when I set out on a mission to create plugins that save you time, streamline your workflow, and keep your creativity flowing."
