Zer0 Tuner by Vox Samples, the tuner plugin: a lake at dawn under a black pine shore, the ZER0 logo with a green tuner needle through the zero, and a dark glass display reading A2 with its needle just right of zero.

Zer0Tuner · any note to a tenth of a cent, and the shift to your song's key

The only tuner plugin you'll ever need to read the note of any sound, to a tenth of a cent.

See the note of any sound to a tenth of a cent, on a needle or a strobe. HOLD keeps the note a kick, a sub or a sample settles on, and KEY shows exactly how far to shift it to your song's key. Zer0 only listens: your sound passes through bit for bit, with zero latency.

Zer0 in action

Zer0 in under a minute, the real plugin reading real, synthesised notes: the needle and the lake, the strobe, REF, KEY and MUTE. The sound never changes, so this video is the preview.

Why Zer0

01

The note it settles on

A deep sub kick does not start on its note: its pitch falls onto it and fades, and an ordinary needle chases the glide. HOLD waits until the pitch has settled and keeps that note on the display after the sound has gone: within 0.55 cent on synthesised test kicks, 1.3 cents hard-driven.

02

The shift to your key

Knowing the note is half the job. Set KEY to the song's key and Zer0 shows the shift to the nearest root, 3rd or 5th, in semitones and cents, ready to type into your sampler's transpose and fine tune.

03

Real notes only, your sound untouched

A second check on the sound's overtones refuses anything that is not clearly a note: white and pink noise showed a reading 0 % of the time in the tests. And the audio passes through bit for bit, with zero latency.

The Zer0 Tuner window on Init: a lake at dawn under a black pine shore, mirrored in the water; the ZER0 logo with a green tuner needle through the zero and TUNER under it; the REF knob at 440.0 HZ, A4 PITCH, and HOLD on the left; the dark glass display with its needle just right of zero on a scale from -50 to +50 cents, reading A2, 110.57 HZ, +9.0 CT; RANGE with GUITAR / VOICE lit, VIEW with NEEDLE lit and the KEY knob at OFF on the right; the IN and OUT meters, MUTE and ENGAGE along the bottom.

See the note. Tune to zero.

The note large, the frequency to a hundredth of a hertz and the cents to a tenth, with a needle that turns green within 2 cents.

The tuner plugin

The only tuner plugin you'll ever need: read the note of any sound, to a tenth of a cent.

A deep sub kick or a one-shot does not start on its note: its pitch falls onto the note and fades, so an ordinary needle chases the glide and has gone by the time you look. And knowing the note is only half the job: you still have to work out how far to shift it to fit the song. Zer0 holds the note a sound settles on and gives you the shift.
  • The note it settles on. HOLD waits until the pitch has settled and keeps that note on the display after the sound has gone.
  • The shift to your key. KEY shows the shift to the nearest root, 3rd or 5th of your song's key, in semitones and cents, ready for your sampler.
  • A tenth of a cent. A needle, a three-band strobe, and REF from 400 to 480 Hz for any ensemble's A.
  • Real notes only, your sound untouched. Noise read 0 % of the time in the tests; bit-for-bit pass-through and zero latency.

Zer0 Tuner's display holding a deep sub note: the needle left of zero, F1 at 43.20 HZ, -17.9 CT; the green line HELD F1 -17.9 CT 43.20 HZ under it; and the shift to the key: TO D#1 (3RD OF C MINOR): -2 ST +17.9 CT.

HOLD · KEY

Hold the note. Shift it to the key.

HOLD keeps the note a kick or a sample settles on; KEY gives the shift to the nearest root, 3rd or 5th of your song's key, in semitones and cents.

What Zer0 does

Every control has one job: read the note you hear, and put it in your song's key.

The reading

Every number you need, at a glance

The note large with its number beside it (A4 is the A above middle C), the frequency to 0.01 Hz and the cents to 0.1, plus when sharp and minus when flat. Within 2 cents the cents and the needle turn green. The numbers refresh about eight times a second so they stay readable; a new note shows at once.

REF

Tune to any ensemble's A

The pitch of A4 every reading is measured against, from 400 to 480 Hz in 0.1 Hz steps: 440 Hz standard pitch, 415 for baroque pitch, 442 or 443 for many orchestras, 432 for tracks tuned there. A tone at REF reads A4 within 0.5 cent. A double-click puts it back to 440.

RANGE

Guitar and voice, or the deepest sub

GUITAR / VOICE (the default) reads from 58 Hz, a 7-string's low B, and answers fastest: a low E string in about 65 ms. BASS / 808 reads down to A0, 27.5 Hz, for sub bass, deep sub kicks and 5-string bass, and still reads the higher notes; an E1 takes about 0.13 s.

VIEW: NEEDLE

See how far off, and which way

A needle over 50 cents either side of the note, with a tick at every cent and a green zone 2 cents either side of zero. It glides to each reading over 100 ms instead of jumping with every small waver.

VIEW: STROBE

The finest tuning, a tenth of a cent

Three bands of stripes drift right when the note is sharp and left when it is flat, faster the further off, and stand still in tune. The lower bands move two and four times as fast, so the smallest error shows there first. Get the needle to zero, then tune until the bottom band stops.

HOLD

Read a sound that is already gone

Waits until the pitch has stopped gliding, never holds the glide, and keeps the middle of the settled readings: HELD, the note, the cents and the frequency, on the line under the reading. It stays after the sound has gone, until the next settled note replaces it.

KEY

The exact transpose for your sampler

Your song's key, from C MAJOR to B MINOR. The line under the reading shows the shift to the nearest root, 3rd or 5th of it, for example TO D#1 (3RD OF C MINOR): -2 ST +17.9 CT: transpose down 2 semitones, fine-tune up 17.9 cents. The nearest is always the smallest shift, which keeps the sample's character.

MUTE

Tune silently

Silences the output while you tune, with a 10 ms fade so there is no click; the display keeps reading and OUTPUT MUTED shows. Map it to a footswitch with MIDI Learn for silent tuning on stage.

ENGAGE

A bypass that never touches the sound

Your host's bypass. Off, the tuner rests and the display reads OFF. With MUTE off the audio is the same either way: Zer0 only listens, so there is no mix and no gain anywhere, on purpose.

Real notes only

No needle on hiss and drums

A second check on the sound's overtones confirms the register and refuses anything that is not clearly a note, so hiss, breath and most drums show "--". In the tests white and pink noise showed a reading 0 % of the time; drum loops at most 32 %, on their pitched kick bodies.

14 sourced presets

Start from the job at hand

Init for plug in and play; Guitar / Strobe and Silent Tune; Bass / 5-String and Strobe; three for deep sub kicks, among them 808 / To C Minor, which holds the note and gives the shift to C minor; Sample / Root Note and To C Minor; and A4 at 415, 442, 443 and 432 Hz. Only Silent Tune changes the audio, by muting it.

A lake at dawn

See in tune without reading

The reflection in the water ripples while the note is off, toward you when sharp and away when flat, growing as it moves further off, and goes mirror-still in tune. The sun on the water follows the output. In silence or with ENGAGE off the water is still.

Inside the plugin

The Zer0 window: a lake at dawn, a glass display with the note, and nothing that touches the sound.

Questions

Does it change my sound?

No. The audio leaves exactly as it came in, at every setting and in every preset (tested bit for bit), with zero latency. Only MUTE changes it, by silencing it on purpose.

Can it read deep sub kicks and sub bass?

Yes. Set RANGE to its bass setting, which reads down to A0 (27.5 Hz), and turn HOLD on. It shows the note the sound settles on after its pitch fall, and keeps it after the sound has gone.

How do I put a kick or a sample in my song's key?

Set KEY to the key. The display shows the shift to the nearest root, 3rd or 5th, for example "-2 ST +17.9 CT": enter -2 semitones in your sampler's transpose and +17.9 cents in its fine tune, play it again and check that it reads 0 cents.

Why does my sample read a different note from its file name?

A sample is often named for the pitch it passes through at its loudest. HOLD reads where it settles, which is what you hear as its note.

Why does it show "--" on my drum loop?

On purpose: it shows a note only when there is one, so hiss, noise and most drums do not move the needle.

Can I tune to 432 or 442 Hz?

Yes: REF sets A4 anywhere from 400 to 480 Hz in 0.1 Hz steps; presets cover 415, 442, 443 and 432.

Can I tune silently on stage?

Yes: MUTE silences the output while the display keeps reading; MIDI-learn it to a footswitch, or load Guitar / Silent Tune.

Does it read chords?

No: it reads one note at a time. Play strings one by one.

Why are flats shown as sharps?

Every note is spelt with sharps, in every key, as chromatic tuners spell them: D# is E flat.

Why does a note that fades in slowly not read?

A tone that swells in from silence over a quarter of a second or more may not be picked up at first. A plucked, struck or sung note, or one that fades in within 50 ms, reads at once.

How much CPU does it use?

The reading costs about 0.85 % of one core at 44.1 or 48 kHz, and about 1.6 % in the bass range with its two detectors (upper bounds, as measured). With the window open and a note moving, the display adds 1.28 to 1.43 %; closed, nothing.

Why is my track silent?

Until Zer0 Tuner is activated on your computer it is silent and does not read, and the activation card covers its window. Activate it with the code we email you.

Does it work in my DAW?

Any 64-bit DAW that loads VST3, AU or AAX plug-ins, on Windows 7 SP1 or later or macOS 10.13 or later. There is no standalone app.

How many computers can I use it on?

Up to five of your own for each copy you buy. To move it, deactivate it in the plugin on the old computer and unlock it on the new one.

Does it need the internet?

Once, to unlock it with the code we email you. After that it checks in now and then and works offline in between.

Is there a manual?

Yes. The full manual explains every control, every preset and the menus, with tips. It opens from the help key (?) in the plugin's top bar, and lives at https://voxsamples.com/zer0-tuner-manual.

What if it's not for me?

Founder's Story

"When COVID hit, I finally had time to dive into music production—only to discover I was missing the right tools. The plugins I tried were clunky, overloaded with unnecessary features, and killed my vibe with endless tweaking. I knew there had to be a better way.

So, with my engineering background, I started making free and simple audio plugins for my producer friends. They loved them! That’s when I set out on a mission to create plugins that save you time, streamline your workflow, and keep your creativity flowing."

- Ryan Svensson (Founder & CEO)
