Byte BackVintage digital delay · the early-80s rack echo, 13-bit grit or clean studio
The only digital delay you'll ever need for the classic rack echo on every lead.
Clear, distinct repeats with a touch of early digital grit: the rack-delay sound behind a thousand guitar leads. Set the time and the number of echoes, lock them to your song, gallop with a second tap, or freeze them with HOLD. Zero latency, level-matched presets.

Hear the difference
The same dry sound, without and with Byte Back.
Clean guitar, the classic rack echo
A clean picked guitar · Init (13-BIT, about 380 ms, a few repeats)
The dotted gallop
A clean picked guitar · Gallop / Dotted Gallop (dotted eighths, in time)
Synth lead, chorused repeats
An 80s synth melody · Mod / Chorus Lead
A pop vocal, clean studio echoes
A dry pop lead · Vocal / Studio Vocal
The long rack echo
An 80s synth melody · Long / Long Rack (a 2.5 s echo)
Every clip is level-matched, so the difference you hear is tone, not volume.
Byte Back in action
Why Byte Back
Repeats you can count
REPEATS reads the number of echoes you will actually hear, from one echo to endless, and each echo stays clear and distinct: the digital sound, not a tape smear.
Early-80s grit, or clean
13-BIT runs the echoes through a 13-bit converter and a gentle tube-style preamp, as the first rack delays did. STUDIO is the clean, full-range later sound.
Gallop, sync and hold
SYNC locks the echoes to your tempo, DUAL adds a second tap for the dotted gallop, and HOLD freezes the echoes into a loop you can play over.
Time. Repeats.
Two big knobs do the work: how far behind the echo falls, and how many echoes you hear.

- SYNC, DUAL, MIX, IN and OUT with meters, and ENGAGE.
- 12 factory presets and your own preset files; A/B, undo and redo, MIDI Learn on every control; a window from 75 to 200 %; the full manual.
DUAL
The dotted gallop.
SYNC on a dotted eighth, DUAL's second tap, the feedback narrowed with TONE: the galloping rhythm guitarists chase.
What Byte Back does
Every control has one job: the echo you hear in your head, faster.
TIME
How far behind
20 ms to 2.5 s free (380 ms by default), or note values from 1/32 triplet to a whole note with SYNC. The line under it reads the time at your tempo.
REPEATS
Echoes you can count
The number of echoes you hear before they fall 40 dB away: one echo at 0 %, six by default, endless at 100 %, and the knob reads the count.
TONE
Shape the repeats
A band-pass on the feedback only: open at 0 %, down to 500 Hz to 2 kHz at 100 %, so each repeat gets darker and thinner while the first echo stays full.
MOD
A chorused shimmer
A slow pitch wobble on the echoes, up to 10 cents, for the chorused rack-delay sound. 15 % by default, barely there.
TYPE
13-BIT or STUDIO
13-BIT: a tube-style preamp, a 17 kHz band limit and a 13-bit converter on the echoes. STUDIO: clean and full range.
SYNC
Locked to your song
One key in the footer: TIME in note values at your tempo, straight, dotted or triplet.
DUAL
The gallop
A second echo at 4/3 of TIME: with a dotted eighth it gives the classic galloping pair.
HOLD
Freeze the echoes
Holds what is in the echoes as a seamless loop and stops new sound coming in. Play over it, then let go. Never saved.
MIX
From a hint to fully wet
The echoes against the dry, equal power; 30 % by default. The dry is never filtered or delayed.
12 sourced presets
Start from settings that work
Rack leads, dotted gallops, series pairs, a hold pad, a studio vocal, narrow-band repeats, a chorused lead, long racks and a fully wet send.
A face that moves
Watch the echoes run back
Each note runs back into the smoked glass as a row of red LED copies, one per echo you hear; HOLD lights them all.

How Byte Back compares
Countable repeats, 13-bit grit and a freeze, with the controls most leave out.
| Byte Back | Typical digital delay plugins | |
|---|---|---|
| Repeats | Reads the number of echoes you hear | A feedback percentage to guess |
| Character | 13-BIT grit or clean STUDIO | One clean sound |
| Gallop | DUAL's second tap, one click | Two delays set by hand |
| Freeze | HOLD, one click | Often missing |
| Latency | 0 ms | Often a buffer of latency |
| Level | Every preset within 1 LU of the dry | Often louder or quieter |
| Try-and-compare | A/B, A>B, undo and redo | Often missing |
| Hardware control | MIDI Learn on every control | Often host automation only |
| Licence | 5 computers per copy, no dongle, works offline | Often fewer activations, or a dongle |
| Updates | Lifetime updates included | Often paid upgrades |

Questions
How do I get the classic digital delay guitar sound?
Put it on a clean or lightly driven lead and play: Init is about 380 ms, six repeats and 30 % mix in 13-BIT, the classic rack-lead setting. Lead / Rack Lead and Lead / Four Forty are close variations.
How do I get the dotted-eighth gallop?
Load Gallop / Dotted Gallop: SYNC on a dotted eighth, DUAL's second tap and a narrowed TONE. Play eighth notes and the echoes fill the gaps.
What is the difference between 13-BIT and STUDIO?
13-BIT has the early digital racks' character: a gentle tube-style preamp, a 17 kHz band limit and a 13-bit converter, so the echoes have a little grit. STUDIO is clean and full range, like the later racks.
What does HOLD do?
It freezes what is in the echoes into a seamless loop and stops new sound coming in, so you can play over a held phrase. Let go and the echoes fade as usual. HOLD is never saved in a preset or a session.
Does it add latency?
No. The dry passes straight through and the echoes come after it, so you can play and record through it live.
Does it work in my DAW?
Any 64-bit DAW that loads VST3, AU or AAX plug-ins, on Windows 7 SP1 or later or macOS 10.13 or later. There is no standalone app.
How many computers can I use it on?
Up to five of your own for each copy you buy. To move it, deactivate it in the plugin on the old computer and unlock it on the new one.
Does it need the internet?
Once, to unlock it with the code we email you. After that it checks in now and then and works offline in between.
Is there a manual?
Yes. The full manual explains every control, every preset and the menus, with tips. It opens from the help key (?) in the plugin's top bar, and lives at https://voxsamples.com/byte-back-vintage-digital-delay-effect-manual.

Founder's Story
"When COVID hit, I finally had time to dive into music production—only to discover I was missing the right tools. The plugins I tried were clunky, overloaded with unnecessary features, and killed my vibe with endless tweaking. I knew there had to be a better way.
So, with my engineering background, I started making free and simple audio plugins for my producer friends. They loved them! That’s when I set out on a mission to create plugins that save you time, streamline your workflow, and keep your creativity flowing."
