What You Can't Do With an EQ

Play one wave on its own. Click any row in the list and everything else disappears — what's left is a single pure tone that rings for the whole length of the sample, with no attack and no decay. Drones, pads and sustained textures out of one-shot hits. Keep a few waves instead of one and they drift against each other into a slow swell.

Work below a hertz. The narrowest notch on a mastering EQ is several hertz wide. These waves sit a fraction of a hertz apart — tens of thousands of them in a one-second sample. You're picking out single partials of a chord, not frequency regions.

Cut with nothing left behind. Wide selections behave like a flawless linear-phase filter: no resonance, no phase smear, nothing lurking under the part you kept. A sub pulled from a cello sounds like a synth sub, not a muffled cello.
