The only VHS audio effect you'll ever need to make any track an 80s home video.

Hear the difference
The same dry sound, without and with Overdue.
Synthwave mix on an old VHS
A synthwave full mix at 126 BPM - Init (SP band, faint static, a dark chorus)
Synth chords, aged
Dry synth chords at 126 BPM - Synth / Synth Ager (tape wash and tracking noise)
Chillwave summer
A synthwave full mix at 135 BPM - Chillwave / Chillwave Summer (more glow and drift)
Deadbeat fuzz
A synthwave full mix at 140 BPM - Chillwave / Deadbeat Fuzz (HEAT 60: the fuzz of a home tape)
Vaporwave mall
An 80s cyberpunk full mix at 124 BPM - Vaporwave / Mall Plaza 420 (long play, drift, wash)
Eject
The synth chords - Eject / Rewind Stop, EJECT held over beats 3-4 of two bars
Every clip is level-matched, so the difference you hear is tone, not volume.
Overdue in action
Why Overdue
The whole VHS sound
Not just a filter: the tape's squash and warmth, the narrow band, the slow uneven drift, the dark chorus, the stepped grit, the static and the cheap 80s hall, in the order a real tape adds them.
Tracking that slips
Turn TRACKING up and the tape goes wrong the way you remember: the head buzz in the quiet parts, the sound muffling for a moment, short dropouts. Up to 30 % it stays a clean, well-tracked tape.
Real tape speeds
SP, LP and EP, the three speeds a VHS deck recorded at, each its own band, grit, wobble and noise, each level-matched. HEAT for a hotter tape, EJECT for a tape stop in time with the song.
Tracking. Drift.
Two big knobs do the work: how badly the tape tracks, and how much the pitch wanders. Everything else shapes the tape.

The VHS audio effect
- The whole VHS audio sound. Tape squash and saturation, band, wow and flutter, dark chorus, stepped grit, static and an 80s hall, in order.
- Tracking that slips. The head buzz in the quiet parts, muffled dips and dropouts, on one knob.
- Real tape speeds. SP, LP and EP, each its own band, grit, wobble and noise, level-matched.
- In control. HEAT with the level held, a true MIX, a synced EJECT; zero latency.
- TRACKING (static, dips, head buzz and dropouts) and DRIFT (wow and flutter), with the window's television and reels moving with them.
- SPEED (SP, LP, EP), HEAT (up to +16.7 dB into the tape), GLOW (the dark chorus) and WASH (the 80s hall).
- EJECT with EJECT SYNC (1 second, 1 beat, 2 beats or 1 bar), MIX, IN and OUT with meters, and ENGAGE.
- 16 factory presets and your own preset files; A/B, undo and redo, MIDI Learn on every control; a window from 75 to 200 %; the full manual.
TRACKING
The tape starts to slip.
Static, a head buzz under the quiet parts, muffled dips and dropouts: the VHS tracking errors everyone remembers, on one knob.
What Overdue does
Every control has one job: the exact VHS tape you hear in your head, faster.
TRACKING
Clean tape to slipping tape
Static that rises 24 dB across the knob, low-pass dips that sink the top every few seconds, and past 30 % the head-switch buzz under quiet passages and short dropouts. The line under the knob reads the static's level.
DRIFT
Subtle movement to a worn VCR
The slow, uneven wow and the faster flutter together, the wow growing faster, its rate wandering more as you turn it up. The line reads the wow's depth; 70 % and up is a worn VCR.
SPEED
SP, LP or EP
The three speeds a VHS deck recorded at. SP is the best a tape sounds, LP narrower at about 7 kHz, EP about 4 kHz and close to AM radio, with the most noise and wobble. Each is level-matched.
HEAT
Warm tape to hot tape
Pushes the music harder into the tape's squash and saturation, up to +16.7 dB of drive, for a fuzzier, more saturated tape. A measured makeup gain holds the level, so you hear the heat, not a louder track.
GLOW
The dark chorus shimmer
The chorus that makes an old video soundtrack sound nostalgic: its depth and share grow together and its top darkens. Clearly heard at the default; dreamy at the top. The level holds.
WASH
A cheap 80s hall
A dark, washy hall with a long fixed decay, blended in at equal power behind the tape, from a hint to washed out.
EJECT and EJECT SYNC
A tape stop on cue
Hold EJECT and the tape slows to a halt; let go and it spins back up. Over one second, or 1 beat, 2 beats or 1 bar in time with your song. It never sticks in a preset or a saved session.
MIX
All tape, or a touch
A true 0 to 100 % dry/wet. 100 % puts everything on tape; lower it to use Overdue on a bus or a whole mix and keep the original underneath.
IN and OUT
Gain where you need it
Input and output gain, -24 to +24 dB, with level meters on both. An automatic level in front of the tape keeps its sound the same on a quiet stem and a loud mix.
16 sourced presets
Start from settings that work
Chillwave, vaporwave, old school films, the three tape speeds, bad tracking, synth ageing and synced ejects, every one within 1 LU of the dry signal.
Zero latency
Track and perform through it
Nothing looks ahead, so you can sing or play through the tape live. A safety limiter keeps every peak under -1 dBFS.
A face that moves
See the tape play
The reels turn at the tape's real speed and waver with DRIFT, the television snows with TRACKING and rolls a torn bar when the tape slips, and the reels stop when you hold EJECT. It rests when you bypass.

How Overdue compares
The whole VHS sound in one insert, with the tracking errors and controls most leave out.
| Overdue | Typical VHS audio plugins | |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking errors | Head buzz, muffled dips and dropouts on TRACKING | None, or a noise bed only |
| Tape speed | SP, LP and EP, each its own band and noise | One fixed sound |
| Dry/wet | A true 0 to 100 % MIX | Some dry always passes |
| Tape stop | EJECT, synced to a beat, two beats or a bar | A separate plugin |
| Level | Held across HEAT, GLOW and WASH; presets within 1 LU | Louder as you turn it up |
| Saturation | HEAT, the level held | Goes extreme fast |
| Latency | 0 ms | Often some |
| Try-and-compare | A/B, A>B, undo and redo | Often missing |
| Hardware control | MIDI Learn on every control | Often host automation only |
| Licence | 5 computers per copy, no dongle, works offline | Often fewer activations, or a dongle |
| Updates | Lifetime updates included | Often paid upgrades |

Questions
How do I make audio sound like an old VHS tape?
Insert Overdue on the voice, the music or the whole soundtrack: the default is already a VHS tape at standard play. Turn TRACKING up for a worse tape, DRIFT up for more wobble, and pick LP or EP for a narrower, noisier recording.
Can I get the tracking glitches, the buzz and the dropouts?
Yes. Past 30 % TRACKING adds the head buzz under quiet passages, muffled dips and short dropouts. Tracking / Bad Tracking sets it to 90 % for transitions; Tracking / Head Switch Buzz brings out the buzz.
Is it a video plugin?
No. Overdue is an audio plugin for your DAW: it makes the sound of a VHS tape, not the picture. Bounce the audio and put it back under your video.
Does it work on vocals and synths too?
Yes. The dry voice keeps its level and gets the chorus, the narrow band and the drift. The Chillwave and Synth presets are built for pads and synths.
Will it change my levels?
No. An automatic level in front of the tape and measured makeup gains hold the level as you turn HEAT, GLOW and WASH or switch SPEED, and every preset sits within 1 LU of the dry signal.
Can I use it live?
Yes. It adds no latency, so you can sing or play through it in real time.
Does it work in my DAW?
Any 64-bit DAW that loads VST3, AU or AAX plug-ins, on Windows 7 SP1 or later or macOS 10.13 or later. There is no standalone app.
How many computers can I use it on?
Up to five of your own for each copy you buy. To move it, deactivate it in the plugin on the old computer and unlock it on the new one.
Does it need the internet?
Once, to unlock it with the code we email you. After that it checks in now and then and works offline in between.
Is there a manual?
Yes. The full manual explains every control, every preset and the menus, with tips. It opens from the help key (?) in the plugin's top bar, and lives at https://voxsamples.com/overdue-vhs-audio-effect-manual.
What if it's not for me?

Founder's Story
"When COVID hit, I finally had time to dive into music production—only to discover I was missing the right tools. The plugins I tried were clunky, overloaded with unnecessary features, and killed my vibe with endless tweaking. I knew there had to be a better way.
So, with my engineering background, I started making free and simple audio plugins for my producer friends. They loved them! That’s when I set out on a mission to create plugins that save you time, streamline your workflow, and keep your creativity flowing."
- Ryan Svensson (Founder & CEO)
Every VHS sound you remember. One insert.
Three tape speeds, tracking that slips, drift, a dark chorus, tape heat, a cheap 80s hall and a synced eject, at zero latency.
