Hear the difference
Before: the phrase as sung or played. After: the MIDI file Scribbler wrote from it, played on a simple synthesised instrument.
A sung hook, caught as MIDI and played on a synth lead
A sung vocal hook - Init (MELODY, VOICE, -33 dB); after: its MIDI file on a plain synth lead
Sung slides and vibrato, kept as pitch bend
A soft sung phrase - Voice / Pitch Bend (GLIDE on); after: its MIDI notes and bends on a plain synth lead
A fast sung line, snapped to sixteenths in the file
A quick sung verse line - Voice / Sung Line 1/16 (QUANTIZE THE FILE 1/16); after: its MIDI on a synth lead
A synthesised bass line, doubled by a sine sub
A synthesised bass line - Bass / DI Bass 1/16 (RANGE BASS, the file on 1/16); after: its MIDI on a sine sub
A synthesised whistle-like melody, onto a soft synth
A synthesised whistle-like melody - Lead / Whistle Lead (RANGE LEAD); after: its MIDI on a soft, flute-like synth
A synthesised drum loop's main hits as MIDI
A synthesised drum loop - Drums / Strong Hits (DRUMS, -18 dB); after: one synth drum hit per note kept
Scribbler never changes the sound, so the after is its exported MIDI file, written by the plug-in and not edited, on a plain synth. The first three are sung vocals; the bass, the whistle-like melody and the drum loop are synthesised.
Scribbler in action
Scribbler in about half a minute: notes caught from a synthesised voice, SENSITIVITY, a preset that snaps the clip to sixteenths, DRAG MIDI and CLEAR.
Why Scribbler
A clip that lands where you sang
A live note leaves once its pitch has been heard, but every note in the take sits where you really started it: on average within 0.3 to 2 ms on the test voices. While your project plays, the take is laid out on your bars, so it drops straight into time.
Live into your synth
Every note goes out of Scribbler's MIDI output on channel 1 as you sing or play, with its velocity from how hard you started it. GLIDE sends your slides and vibrato as pitch bend, live and in the take.
Your audio, untouched
Scribbler only listens. The audio passes through bit for bit, at every setting, with zero latency, so nothing on the track moves and nothing changes its sound.
Sing it. Drag it.
One big knob and four keys: sing or play one note at a time, watch the notes appear, then drag the take onto a MIDI track.

The audio to MIDI plugin
- A tight clip. Each note in the take sits at its real start, on average within 0.3 to 2 ms on the test voices, even though live notes leave a little later.
- On your bars. While your project plays, the take is laid out on your bars and named for the bar it starts in, so it drops straight into time.
- One note at a time. A voice, a hum, a whistle, a bass, a lead line, single-note guitar or sax; DRUMS turns a beatbox or a drum loop into one note per hit. It does not do chords.
- Your audio untouched. Bit for bit, at every setting, with zero latency: Scribbler only listens.
- SENSITIVITY (-10 to -60 dB), TYPE (MELODY or DRUMS), RANGE (BASS, VOICE or LEAD) and GLIDE (pitch bend, ±2 semitones).
- DRAG MIDI, QUANTIZE THE FILE (1/16 or 1/8, on the clip only) and CLEAR; live MIDI out on channel 1.
- The note display, a 12-second scrolling piano roll, the input bar, IN and OUT meters, the MIDI OUT lamp and ENGAGE.
- 16 factory presets and your own preset files; A/B, undo and redo, MIDI Learn on every control; a window from 75 to 200 %; the full manual.
DRAG MIDI · THE TAKE
Every note where you started it.
Live notes leave once a pitch is heard; the take you drag has no such delay. While your project plays it is laid out on your bars and named for its bar.
What Scribbler does
Every control changes which notes are made, never the sound: from your voice to a MIDI track, faster.
SENSITIVITY
Catch soft notes, skip the noise
How loud a note must start to be caught, from -10 dB on the left to -60 dB on the right. Turn it right for a soft hum or a distant mic, left so breaths and room noise make no notes. The white mark on the input bar shows it against your voice.
TYPE
Melodies or beats
MELODY makes notes from the pitch, one at a time: a voice, a hum, a whistle, a bass or a lead line. DRUMS makes one short note per hit on C1, its velocity from the hit, for a beatbox or a drum loop.
RANGE
Notes where they belong
BASS 30 to 600 Hz, VOICE 65 to 1100 Hz, LEAD 120 to 3200 Hz. The right range keeps every note on the right pitch and gets live notes out sooner: about 32 to 36 ms in LEAD, 55 ms in VOICE, 120 ms in BASS.
GLIDE
Keep the expression
Your slides, scoops and vibrato as pitch bend, ±2 semitones, live and in the take. Set your synth's bend range to 2 and it sings them back. Off, you get plain notes, ready for piano-roll editing.
QUANTIZE THE FILE
A tidy clip, your own timing
Snaps the dragged clip to 1/16 or 1/8 on your project's tempo. The live MIDI is never moved, so you hear your own timing while you play and still get a clip on the grid.
DRAG MIDI and CLEAR
From your voice to a MIDI track
Drag the tile onto a MIDI track for every note caught so far, as a .mid clip, or click it to save the take as a file. Its lamp lights while a note is being caught. CLEAR starts a fresh take.
The take
Every note where you started it
Each note is kept at the moment it really started, its detection delay taken off: on the test voices, on average within 0.3 to 2 ms of the real onsets. The take is saved with your session; presets never carry it.
On your bars
Drops straight into time
While your project plays, the take is laid out on your bars and named for the bar it starts in, such as "Scribbler take bar 17.mid". A new take starts by itself when the transport starts, stops or loops.
The right note
Checked against the sound itself
Every note is checked against the harmonics the sound really has, so it is not caught twelve semitones out. On real single-note instruments that check took 35 of 45 notes to 41 of 45 at the right note.
The note display
See what it heard
The note being sent now with its cents and MIDI number (middle C is C3), and the last 12 seconds of the take as a scrolling piano roll, brighter for a harder note.
ENGAGE
Your audio, always untouched
On, notes are caught and sent; off, nothing is sent and a held note ends, so no note hangs in your synth. Either way the audio passes through bit for bit, with no latency.
16 factory presets
Start from settings that work
Hum to synth, a quiet mic, a noisy room, bass and slide bass, a whistled lead, guitar and sax lines, a beatbox, a loop's strong hits or every hit: each SENSITIVITY set by measuring real material.
An inkwell that listens
See every note caught
The ink glows with the level and glints where the quill dips each time a note is caught, brighter for a harder note. With ENGAGE off, or in silence, it rests.

How Scribbler compares
Live notes and a tight clip on your bars, from one note at a time, with your audio untouched.
| Scribbler | Typical audio to MIDI plugins | |
|---|---|---|
| Live notes | As you sing or play, into your synth | Often an offline step, one file at a time |
| The clip | Every note at its real start, on average within 0.3-2 ms | Often notes placed late, where they were detected |
| Timing | Laid out on your bars and named for its bar | Often a loose clip to line up by hand |
| Quantize | On the clip only; your live timing kept | Often a separate editing step |
| Expression | Slides and vibrato as pitch bend, ±2 semitones | Often plain notes only |
| Beats | DRUMS: one note per hit, velocity from the hit | Often a separate tool |
| Try-and-compare | A/B, A>B, undo and redo | Often missing |
| Hardware control | MIDI Learn on every control | Often host automation only |
| Licence | 5 computers per copy, no dongle, works offline | Often fewer activations, or a dongle |
| Updates | Lifetime updates included | Often paid upgrades |

Questions
Does it do chords or full songs?
No. Scribbler follows one note at a time: a voice, a hum, a whistle, a bass, a lead line, single-note guitar or sax. Chords, full mixes and piano chords give wrong notes or none. On stacked vocals it follows the loudest voice.
Why do the live notes come a little late?
A pitch has to be heard for a few cycles before it can be named: about 32 to 36 ms in LEAD, 55 ms for a voice, 120 ms for a bass. That is fine for playing a synth along with you. The take you drag has no such delay: its notes sit where you really started them.
How do I get the MIDI into my synth?
Route Scribbler's MIDI output to an instrument track: in most hosts, set the instrument track's MIDI input to Scribbler's track. Some hosts ignore MIDI sent by an audio effect; there, drag the DRAG MIDI tile onto a MIDI track, or save the take as a file.
Can it turn a beatbox into drums?
Yes: TYPE DRUMS gives one note per hit on C1, with its velocity from the hit. It does not tell a kick from a snare; choose the sound in your drum sampler, or move notes to other pads by hand.
Will it change my vocal?
No. The audio passes through bit for bit, with no latency. Scribbler only listens.
Can I quantize the result?
Yes: QUANTIZE THE FILE snaps the dragged clip to 1/16 or 1/8. The live MIDI stays as you played it.
Does it keep pitch bends and vibrato?
With GLIDE on, yes: as pitch bend (±2 semitones), live and in the clip. Set your synth's bend range to 2 semitones.
Does it catch very fast lines?
Mostly. A very fast leap, such as a jump of twelve semitones in a quick bass riff, can merge into the note before it. The preview "A synthesised bass line, doubled by a sine sub" shows this as it is: about once a bar the sub holds the root where the bass jumps up. Slow the passage, or hold the jump a little longer.
Is the take saved?
Yes, with your session. Presets never carry it, and a new take starts each time the transport starts, stops or loops, so drag it out before the next pass if you want to keep it.
Does it work in my DAW?
Any 64-bit DAW that loads VST3, AU or AAX plug-ins, on Windows 7 SP1 or later or macOS 10.13 or later. There is no standalone app.
How many computers can I use it on?
Up to five of your own for each copy you buy. To move it, deactivate it in the plugin on the old computer and unlock it on the new one.
Does it need the internet?
Once, to unlock it with the code we email you. After that it checks in now and then and works offline in between.
Is there a manual?
Yes. The full manual explains every control, every preset and the menus, with tips. It opens from the help key (?) in the plugin's top bar, and lives at https://voxsamples.com/scribbler-audio-to-midi-manual.

Founder's Story
"When COVID hit, I finally had time to dive into music production—only to discover I was missing the right tools. The plugins I tried were clunky, overloaded with unnecessary features, and killed my vibe with endless tweaking. I knew there had to be a better way.
So, with my engineering background, I started making free and simple audio plugins for my producer friends. They loved them! That’s when I set out on a mission to create plugins that save you time, streamline your workflow, and keep your creativity flowing."
- Ryan Svensson (Founder & CEO)
The line in your head. In your piano roll.
Sing, hum or play it one note at a time: the notes play your synth as you go, and the take drops onto your bars, every note where you started it.
